ABOUT SOUNDLOCKET®
Soundlocket® is a new kind of heirloom created to record, hold and reproduce up to sixty seconds of sound.
Its energy is generated by winding the crown by hand. No battery, charging, application or external connection is required. The sound remains stored within the object itself.
Soundlocket® can hold one recording of up to sixty seconds. The recording may contain spoken words, music or another personally meaningful sound. It may be replaced until the Soundlocket® is encapsulated, after that recording is no longer possible.
Soundlocket® holds one recording at a time.
The recording may be replaced until Soundlocket® is permanently encapsulated for its final owner. From that moment, the sound becomes part of the object and can no longer be replaced.
HOW IT WORKS
Soundlocket® is powered by winding the crown by hand. At its heart is Mecheart, a compact mechatronic architecture developed to convert mechanical movement into the electrical energy required to record and reproduce sound. The principle is familiar from much larger systems. The challenge was to realise it at an exceptionally small scale and make the experience precise, reliable and effortless to use.
No. Soundlocket® does not contain a conventional battery and does not require a charging cable, application or external power source. The energy required to operate it is generated by winding the crown by hand.
No. Soundlocket® operates independently. Recording, storing and listening take place within the object itself. No phone, headphones, application, cloud service or external connection is required.
The sound memory is designed to preserve the recording for decades without a continuous power supply, cloud service or external device.
MAKING AND ORIGIN
Soundlocket® is designed, assembled and individually finished in Finland. Each piece is assembled by a watchmaker and passes through approximately four hundred stages of making, assembly and finishing.
Every Soundlocket® is assembled and individually finished by a watchmaker in Finland. The work brings together precision engineering, specialist craftsmanship and careful hand-finishing.
Each Soundlocket® brings together approximately one hundred individual components within its compact architecture. With the exception of its electronic components, the components are handled and finished by hand.
Annual production capacity is intentionally limited to approximately 30–50 Soundlockets. This allows every piece to be assembled, finished and tested individually.
Yes. Every Soundlocket® carries its own individual number, establishing the identity of the piece from the moment it is completed.
Soundlocket® began with an idea for which no ready-made mechanism, product category or established method of making existed.
Its form evolved through several generations of prototypes. Once the exterior had reached its essential expression, the work continued inside. Energy generation, sound recording and reproduction, materials, assembly, reliability and user experience each required further rounds of engineering, testing and refinement.
Nearly a decade passed between the original idea and the CE-marked Soundlocket® made today.
MATERIALS AND USE
Soundlocket® Pure is crafted from stainless steel and protected by sapphire crystal. The materials were selected for their durability, precision and quiet visual character.
Soundlocket® Pure measures 44 millimetres in diameter and 18 millimetres in height. Its weight begins at approximately 80 grams.
No. Soundlocket® is protected against normal humidity and dust but is not water-resistant. It should not be worn or used while swimming, showering or in other conditions where it may be exposed to water.
Soundlocket® is designed to be operated at room temperature. If the object has been exposed temporarily to unusually hot or cold conditions, allow it to return fully to room temperature before operating it.
PERSONALISATION AND PRIVATE COMMISSIONS
Yes. Soundlocket® Pure may be personalised with an individual engraving created for its owner. Personalisation is discussed as part of the private ordering process.
A Private Commission is a one-of-one Soundlocket® created for one individual, one story and one moment in time. Materials, proportions, gemstones, engraving and individual details are developed through a private creative process. The completed design is created once and never repeated.
Materials may include precious metals, gemstones and individually developed decorative or structural details. The possibilities are explored privately according to the meaning, intended setting and creative direction of each commission.
